Ch. The Calendar of the Permutations of 1000 Arms
Calendar of the Permutations of 1000 Arms visually realizes a calendar system within the fictional universe of Uncanished Workld. By combining the many arms of Avalokiteśvara with structures that record time, the series materializes a virtual calendar deity, whose repeated and arranged limbs symbolize the measurement of months and days. The work consists of three main parts.
The first part, Pulse from Months, is a series of ten acrylic panels representing the muscles of the deity’s arms and the months of the calendar. Each panel composes a landscape of collected beef imagery, positioned below the second part to pair with Śarīra from Days, together forming a single arm of Avalokiteśvara.
The second part, Śarīra from Days, is a pen drawing representing the bones of the deity’s arms and the days of the calendar. Inspired by the śarīra of cremated Buddhist monks, the artist reimagined collected minerals as sacred relics, randomly assembled to create branching limb structures that convey rebirth and transformation.
The third part, Demagnified z-axis + Cerebral Hemispheres of a Day and Night, depicts the deity’s head and eyes. The eyes symbolize the virtual calendar deity and provide a unique perspective between the world and individual perception. A brass semicircular diagram, inspired by ancient sundials, carries inscriptions that metaphorically reflect the process of the panel works.
Together, these three parts visualize cycles and providence. The choice of Avalokiteśvara is symbolic, one among multiple deities in the fictional pantheon. Like religious or mythological systems, causality is not absolute, yet the structures of existence, time, and repetition operate as rules or providence, shaping or constraining human perception. Through the arrangement of limbs, days, and months, viewers experience the cyclical flow of time, law, and layered perceptual structures.
Calendar of the Permutations of 1000 Arms는 Uncanished Workld의 세계관 안에서 달력 시스템을 시각적으로 구현한 작품이다. 천수관음의 수많은 팔과 시간을 기록하는 달력 구조를 결합하여, 팔의 배열과 반복을 통해 가상 달력 신으로 형상화한다. 작품은 세 가지 주요 파트로 구성된다.
첫 번째 파트인 Pulse from Months는 아크릴 페인팅으로 제작된 10개의 패널 시리즈로, 천수관음 팔의 근육을 상징하며 달력의 달을 나타낸다. 각 패널은 소고기 장면을 수집해 하나의 풍경처럼 배열하였고, 아래쪽에 배치되어 위쪽의 Śarīra from Days와 한 쌍을 이루어 하나의 천수관음 팔을 상징한다.
두 번째 파트인 Śarīra from Days는 펜 드로잉으로, 천수관음 팔의 뼈를 상징하며 달력의 날을 나타낸다. 고행을 마친 불교 승려의 화장한 시신에서 나오는 사리(Śarīra)와 미리 수집한 광물들을 랜덤하게 조립하여 팔이 뻗은 구조를 형상화함으로써 재탄생과 변형의 과정을 표현한다.
세 번째 파트인 Demagnified z-axis + Cerebral Hemispheres of a Day and Night는 가상의 달력 신의 머리와 눈 부분을 나타낸다. 눈은 가상 달력 신의 눈을 상징하며, 세계와 개인의 인식 공간이라는 두 차원 사이의 독특한 시각을 제공한다. 황동 반원판 위의 다이어그램은 고대 해시계에서 영감을 받았고, 황동판 위의 문장들은 판넬 작업의 과정을 은유적으로 나타내어, 전체 시리즈의 시간과 배열, 반복과 변형의 구조를 상징적으로 드러낸다.
이 세 파트를 통해, 작품은 순환과 섭리를 시각적으로 드러낸다. 천수관음을 차용한 이유는 특별한 선택이라기 보다는, 내 가상 세계의 체계를 구성하는 여러 다신·다중적 존재 중 하나로서 상징적 역할을 부여하기 위함이다. 실제 종교나 신화 체계에서 인과법칙이 명확히 결정되지 않듯, 달력 신 또한 절대적 인과를 따르지 않지만, 존재와 시간, 반복의 구조가 규칙과 섭리처럼 작동하며 한 인간의 인식과 경험의 틀을 형성하거나 제한한다. 이를 통해 관람자는 작품 속 팔과 날, 달의 배열을 따라 움직이며, 시간과 존재의 순환적 흐름 속에서 법칙과 섭리, 다층적 인식 구조를 체험하게 된다.
