Artist Statement

Uncanished Workld

My work, Uncanished Workld, is a series of installations combining drawing, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and text, creating a virtual world with mythological and narrative qualities. It visualizes the invisible epistemological space between individual perception and the world, exploring the systems humans have built to understand and impose order on reality. I focus on religious belief systems as one such structure, analyzing and dismantling their constituent elements—myth, architecture, and religious imagery. These elements are then reassembled with mathematical structures and scientific references to form the fundamental components of world-building, such as time, space, terrain, and calendars. Each project functions as a chapter addressing a fundamental unit of Uncanished Workld, using scientific and mathematical diagrams, religious iconography, and mythological imagery to connect the chapters and shape the world. The name of this world reflects its nature: its uncanny aspect signifies the impossibility of fully grasping reality, while its unfinished aspect indicates that the pursuit of understanding never ends. Like its name, this world can be described through language, yet it cannot be fully articulated or captured; this quality allows me to explore and reveal how human belief and imagination understand and construct meaning within the world.

나의 작업 Uncanished Workld는 드로잉, 조각, 회화, 판화, 텍스트를 결합한 설치 연작으로, 신화적·서사적 성격을 지닌 가상 세계를 구현하며, 개인의 인식과 세계 사이에 존재하는 보이지 않는 인식론적 영역을 가시화하고, 인간이 세계를 이해하고 질서를 부여하기 위해 구축해 온 체계들을 탐구한다. 나는 그중 하나로서 종교적 믿음과 이를 구성하는 신화, 건축, 종교미술의 요소들을 분석하고 해체한다. 해체된 요소들은 수학적 구조와 과학적 레퍼런스와 결합되어 시간, 공간, 지형, 달력과 같은 세계 구성의 기본 단위로 재조합된다. 각각의 프로젝트는 Uncanished Workld의 세계를 구성하는 기본 단위를 다루는 하나의 장(chapter)으로 기능하며, 과학적·수학적 다이어그램, 종교적 도상, 신화적 이미지를 활용하여 각 장이 서로 맥락을 이루며 세계를 구성한다. 이 세계의 이름은 이러한 성격을 반영하며, 기이(uncanny)한 측면은 현실을 완전히 파악할 수 없음을, 미완(unfinished)한 측면은 이해를 향한 탐구가 끝나지 않음을 의미한다. 이 세계는 그 명칭 자체와 마찬가지로 언어를 통해 서술될 수는 있으나, 완전히 발화되거나 포착될 수 없는 존재이며, 이러한 성격을 통해 나는 인간의 믿음과 상상력이 세계를 이해하고 의미를 구성하는 방식을 탐구하고 드러내고자 한다.
