Ch. Origami Hermit Crab
Origami Hermit Crab draws on the Aspidochelone myth and fractal theory to present a massive imaginary hermit crab island. In this work, the hermit crab appears as a mythic, island-like entity—a land that seems solid yet is alive. Its shell, a well-known example of fractal form, symbolizes structures in nature shaped through repetition and expansion and serves as the conceptual starting point of the piece.
The work consists of two interconnected parts. The Anti-Fractal Map, created with pen and watercolor on silk, represents both the hermit crab’s shell and the terrain of the island. The map incorporates traces from historically, religiously, and culturally layered sites the artist has visited, reflecting the accumulated histories and entangled stories of these places. These traces are layered over the folded paper structure, forming anti-fractal patterns that seem navigable but ultimately confound orientation. Demagnified z-axis + Hermit Crab’s Body symbolizes the crab’s body, particularly its eyes, and provides a unique perspective between the dimensions of the world and individual perception. As visitors move through the intricate terrain of the work, they explore the shifting boundaries between perception and imagination.
Origami Hermit Crab은 아스피도켈론 신화와 프랙탈 이론에서 영향을 받아, 상상의 거대한 소라게 섬을 중심으로 전개되는 작업이다. 이 작업에서 소라게는 신화 속 아스피도켈론처럼 섬으로 인식되는 존재로 등장하며, 관람자는 하나의 대지처럼 보이지만 실은 생명체인 지형을 마주하게 된다. 프랙탈의 대표적인 예 중 하나로 자주 언급되는 소라게의 껍질은, 자연 속에서 반복과 확장을 통해 형성되는 구조를 상징하며 본 작업의 개념적 출발점이 된다.
본 작업은 두 가지 파트로 구성된다. 실크 위에 펜 드로잉과 수채로 제작된 The Anti-Fractal Map은 소라게의 껍질이자 거대한 소라게 섬의 지형을 기록한 지도이다. 지도에는 작가가 방문한, 다양한 사람들의 역사와 이야기가 얽힌 종교적·문화적·역사적 장소들의 구조와 흔적이 반영되어 있다. 반복적으로 접고 펼친 종이에서 생성된 선 구조 위에 중첩된 이러한 흔적들은 출구가 있는 듯 보이지만 끝내 방향을 잃게 만드는 안티-프랙탈 구조를 형성한다. 한편 Demagnified z-axis + Hermit Crab’s Body는 소라게의 몸체, 특히 눈을 상징하며, 세계와 개인의 인식 공간이라는 두 차원 사이의 독특한 시각을 제공한다. 관람자는 작품 속 복잡한 지형을 따라 이동하며, 끊임없이 변형되는 구조 속에서 인식과 상상의 경계를 탐험하게 된다.
